A snapshot on the hydropower sector in Albania Author: Dr Lorenc Gordani Legal Adviser in Albania Energy Market The attempt to provide a clear picture on the developments of granted projects in hydropower is rather difficult task. First due to their large number of projects and extension in time with different regime and the occasionally public reports that have create a confusion about the total figures - at least for who do not manage every day the matter. However, referring to official data on concessions (that do not include authorisation procedure) of the last report of NANR, and further the one of MIE on March 2018, as well as the report of ERE June 2018, it can be roughly said: ▶ Total installed capacity reached around the 2,100 MW, with…

New markets for hydropower

Activity
New markets for hydropower Western Balkans partner region of RENEXPO® INTERHYDRO, European hydropower trade fair and congress, November 29th and 30th, Salzburg Salzburg, August 2018: The Western Balkan region has the largest remaining unexploited hydropower potential in Europe, as its river catchments have remained largely undeveloped. The region has an estimated 80,000 GWh technical potential, which is concentrated in the mountainous regions of Montenegro and Albania. As the region tries to limit greenhouse-gas emissions in line with EU goals, it could see the increased co-generation of biomass and gas with coal, while also promoting the development of renewable energies, mainly focusing on hydropower. Bosnia and Herzegovina has about 3,500 MW of unused hydropower potential. Macedonia about 5500 GWH, of which only about 27% are used. Montenegro, although it is only a small…

So, Albania even without being part of the EU, regard the energy sector, due to its involvement in the Energy Community Treaty (EnCT) and global agreements in climate changes, has adopted already the legal framework, is strengthening the institutional participation, and have to work more on enforce the putting in practice the engagements taken at international level. Energy policy a factor of power and economic growth

Activity, Research
Energy policy a factor of power and economic growth, Dr Lorenc Gordani, 22th October 2017 [metaslider id=11349] Our energy system is on the brink of a revolution! Climate change imposes an increasingly binding constraint on the use of fossil fuels. Even, the fossil fuel-based energy has been such a powerful engine of growth, the above transition is an “golden” opportunity for a “green growth” through a development of new forms of economy that are self-resource efficient, oriented toward a proactive consume, clean and protective of the natural environment, etc. Afford of such challenges by public authorities request a long sight looking integrated approach: the energy assets are long-lived, that makes necessary the start decarbonizing of the energy systems early! Anticipating a future carbon constraint is often cheaper than risking stranded…
