Time for a paradigm shift from hydro to photovoltaic? Author: Dr Lorenc Gordani Legal Adviser in Albania Energy Market 1. A Snapshot in Albanian Generation Capacity Albania is fully dependent on hydropower for electricity generation; nearly 100 per cent of the country’s domestically produced electricity comes from hydropower. The mountainous nation is home to eight major river systems and more 140 mid-small fluvial streams. The major of them, Drin River located in northern Albania, hosts a relevant cascade with four hydropower stations for an installed capacity around 1,400 MW. Notwithstanding more than 25 years of efforts to develop the private sector of generation, the public incumbent still represents around 65% of the country’s total electricity production. The remaining 100 MW of installed capacity, distributed over the country, have passed in…

Solar energy determinant on the policy 2020 Author: Dr. Lorenc Gordani Legal Adviser on Energy Market The development of alternative renewable energies, and especially those from the sun and wind, in order to diversify and optimize the energy production in Albania, have become the main objective in the strategic energy sector. In this regard, while is being implemented in practice the first floor of photovoltaics by 20 MW, the renewed action plan (NREAP 2020) has triple the total amount of photovoltaic capacity, ranging from 40 MW at 120 MW, and doubling as far as that of the wind. A strategic development that come as part of an agreement between the energy ministry and the EBRD signed the beginning of May 2017, and then between the EBRD and the Energy Secretariat…

Information
Oil production substantially increase the exports Autori: Dr. Lorenc Gordani Legal Adviser in the Albanian Energy Market A recent article in the renowned magazine Oil Price asked “Can Oil Pull Greece Out Of Poverty?”. The obvious thought that rise up in mind is a parallel with already huge amount reserves available and exploited in Albania. According to data published by state-run statistical institute, INSTAT, Albania’s exports officially grew by double digits in the first half of this year. In spite of the influence in this result that came from the bankruptcy of the only local refining industry to the ownership of the Armo company, the fact is that the hydrocarbon sector is very important for Albania. On regard, an important part of exports growth is a result of a sharp…

A new procedure released aims auctions by 10-30 MW for a total of 100 MW. Thus, fundamental became the learn lessons from mistakes in hydropower plants but also those made by other countries in photovoltaics! Today, the possibility of producing solar energy in Albania is no more a novelty! Even recently, the government has increased the capacity offered for photovoltaic investments for a total up to 120 megawatts. For plants by to 2 MW, the current purchase price based on the formula that is calculated on the parameters of return on long-term investment,…
